Is The Jersey Devil Real? Terror in the Pine Barrens
Liner notes
Beyond the Spiritual Nexus is the podcast that informs about all things spiritual.
Deep in the dense, dark pine forests of South Jersey lives one of America’s most terrifying and enduring cryptid legends: The Jersey Devil.
This week, Diana and Xandra venture into the Pine Barrens to unearth the truth behind Mother Leeds’ cursed 13th child. Was this creature a genuine demonic manifestation, an ancient forest spirit, or the result of a vicious 18th-century political rivalry involving Benjamin Franklin and the Leeds family? We break down the historical lore, explore the famous 1909 mass-hysteria sightings, and examine the energetic imprint left in the woods.
Plus, we break down this week's astrological shifts in Cosmic Currents, and introduce a new segment called Guess What Happened To Me, where Xandra and Diana share listeners' personal accounts of the unexplainable.
Light your candles, lock your windows, and step into the Pines with us.
Until the next episode, we wish you love, joy, and light. Tune in again soon for another topic on Beyond the Spiritual Nexus.

diana: Good evening everyone and welcome back to Beyond the Spiritual Nexus, your cosmic connection. I'm your host, Diana Rose, and tonight we are diving straight back into our eight-week long All Hallows Eve celebration. And I'm Xandra. Welcome back to Cosmic Monday, where we like to talk about all things mystical, magical, and supernatural. Now, before we get into the meat of today's show, we have an admission of guilt to make. At the end of our last episode, we promised another look into the Warren Archive, specifically an exploration of the notorious Amityville horror case. Yes, we did promise that, Sandra, didn't we? And we were fully prepared to walk through the DeFeo family history and all the psychic impressions attached to that house on Ocean Avenue. But we decided to pivot tonight. So Amityville is on pause for now. Look, Amityville is a classic. but if I had to read through one more file on Bleeding Walls or Phantom Pig Eyes this this week, my brain was gonna turn into lukewarm opial. Plus, mom spent three hours straight yesterday hyperfixating on 18th-century New Jersey forestry maps. So, welcome to the Pine Barrens, everybody. It was a deeply engaging research centre, I have to tell you. And honestly, the Amityville files aren't going anywhere. So tonight we're tracking a homegrown American legend with a focus on deep historical records, bizarre eyewitness accounts, and one of the most high profile royal encounters in cryptid history. We're talking about the Jersey Devil. yes. The Jersey Devil. It's basically a mashup with the head of a horse, the wings of a bat, a snaketail and hoops. And legend says it roams the pine barrens with the absolute worst attitude imaginable. I'd have a bad attitude if I looked like that too, Sandra. Couldn't you? Yeah, but you know, you gotta think disgruntled customer trying to return something without a receipt. That's a very vivid and oddly specific picture, my love. That's what I thought of. But for us with our background, cryptids occupy a really unique space, actually. absolutely, yeah. So we accept spirits and manifestations and energetic imprints as basic reality, right? Mm-hmm. But cryptids hit differently because they bridge the gap between physical biology and straight up nightmare fuel. Exactly. And the history behind this particular entity is actually fascinating, I think so. It stretches back nearly three centuries. Mm. Plus, later in the show, we'll check out our cosmic currents astrology update for the fall equinox week. And we will premiere a brand new segment that we're going to call Guess What Happened to Me. So, dim the lights. Grab a cozy blanket. Pull yourself something warm. And let's jump right in. Alright, grab your tea and settle in everybody, because to understand the Jersey Devil, we have to travel back to the year of seventeen thirty-five to a small, isolated settlement called Leeds Point, New Jersey. 1735. So that was a time when people thought bathing too often was bad for your liver. Uh-huh. Medical advice involved leeches. Uh-huh. And mysterious woods were basically nature's way of saying, Don't go in there. You will definitely be eaten by a demon. Well, the story begins, actually, with a woman known as Mother Leech. Okay. Historically. Identified by many local historians as Deborah Leeds. Legend has it that Mother Leeds was living in extreme poverty in the desolate region of the Pine Barrens. She already had twelve children to care for in a small cabin. Twelve kids in 1735, that's ridiculous. Look, I absolutely ridiculous. Twelve kids in any time period would be ridiculous. Well seventeen thirty five in particular. I can't handle it when I have four t o tabs open on my browser. Okay, so imagining twelve kids they don't have indoor plumbing or electricity or even Wi-Fi to distract them. I think I'd go crazy personally. Absolutely, that makes two of us. So anyway, getting back according to the legend When she discovered that she was pregnant with her 13th child, she raised her hands and exclaimed, Let this child be the devil. So, pro tip for everyone listening: never say that out loud. Remember, words carry weight. The universe has a dark sense of humor, an absolutely zero chill. You can take that to the bank. And Mother Leeds was actually about to find out just how dark. The story goes that on a dark stormy night in 1735, Mother Leeds went into labor. The local midwives gather around her. At first the baby was born looking completely normal, but within minutes the baby. The infant began to undergo a horrific transformation. So, legend goes, the baby starts sprouting cloven hooves, a horse like head, bat wings, sharp clawed hands, and a long serpent like tail. It grows rapidly before their eyes and lets out a blood curdling shriek that shakes the cabin walls, attacks the midwives, flies straight up into the chimney, and disappears into the stormy night over the pine barrens. And also, according to South Jersey folklore, it never left. Now to truly appreciate this story, you have to understand the geography of the pine barons. We're talking about over like a million acres of dense pine forest and heavy fog. Right. Even today, if you drive through Route 70 or Route 72 at night, it feels remarkably isolated. That's that's basically the Earth's equivalent of an unread inbox. It's full of things you'd really rather not confront alone at night. So if your car breaks down in the Pine Barrens, you don't call Triple A. You start praying to whatever deity you favor. Now, local folklore is one thing. But what makes the Jersey Devil legend interesting to me, Sandra, are the high profile documented eyewitness accounts. Right. Which brings us to one of my absolute favorite footnotes, Joseph Bonaparte. Yes, not Napoleon Bonaparte. He was busy losing Waterloo and being exiled to remote islands in the Atlantic at the time. We're talking about his older brother, Joseph Bonaparte. The former king of Naples and Spain. Yes. After Napoleon's final defeat in 1815, apparently Joseph fled Europe with a fortune in jewels and apparently moved to America. He bought a massive, lavish 1800 acre estate in Bordertown, New Jersey called Point Breeze. He spent his days landscaping, you know, entertaining American politicians and elites hunting in the local woods, and apparently encountering local cryptids. Imagine abdicating a throne, right? Moving to New Jersey for just like a quiet little wealthy retirement, and immediately getting flexed on by a horse bat while out hunting. That's just awful, Sandra. Fantastical. Well, the incident actually took place around 1820. Joseph Bonaparte was out hunting alone in the woods near his estate. He reported coming across strange two-legged tracks in the snow. He said The prince res the prince resembled a large bird, the stride of a large bird. But they had cloven hooves. So he follows these tracks, because of course European royalty doesn't have the survival instincts of a common sense survivor. And suddenly he hears a loud screeching hiss behind him. He turns around, and standing right at the edge of the clearing is a creature with a horse's head, long thin legs, large wings, and a piercing, terrifying gaze. Joseph froze in place. The creature stared right at him, hissed loudly, flapped its wings, and vanished. Joseph was so rattled by the experience that he documented it and spoke about it to his high society friends apparently for years afterwards. I this sounds ridiculous, but I love that he didn't even bother trying to click cover it up. Most people would see a demon horse in the woods and think, okay, time to check myself into a specialized facility. Joseph was just like, yeah. I was the king of Spain and yep, I your local swamp demon hissed me while I was trying to shoot pheasants. Past the wine. It was different eras, Sandra. Well he owned it completely. Yeah. He did. And Bonaparte was far from the notable sighting, the only notable sighting. an American naval hero, Commodore Stephen Decatur, Claimed that while inspecting cannonballs at the Hanover Ironworks in the Pine Barrens, he claims to have seen a strange winged beast flying overhead. Okay? He actually said that he fired a cannonball Through its wing, but the creature simply just kept flying as if nothing happened. That's like the most American response to a cryptid. Is that a demon horse? Fire the artillery. yeah. It's all American. Right? But Everything actually culminated in January of nineteen nine during what historians called the Jersey Devil phenomenon. So apparently, for one full week from January sixteenth to January twenty-third, the entire Delaware Valley region. Descended into total chaos. Yeah, this wasn't one guy seeing a weird shadow after having won too many hard siders at the local tavern. This was full scale mass hysteria. Over a thousand people reported direct sightings across dozens of towns in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Wow, Denver, over a thousand people. Trolley cars in Trenton and Camden were ambushed by a screeching creature. Schools were officially closed because terrified parents refused to let their children walk outside. Police officers in multiple towns reported firing their pistols at something hovering in the night sky, only for the bullets to bounce off and have no effect whatsoever. Strange cloven hoof prints were found pressed into the snow on the top of residential rooftops, trailing across pristine backyards and ending abruptly with at fifteen foot brick walls, if if whatever made them simply lifted straight into the air. It was the nineteen nine equivalent of a viral trend. Except instead of a silly video, it was collective terror over a screaming monster. Yes, Sandra, and apparently the situation got so out of hand that the Philadelphia Zoo actually posted an official reward of ten thousand dollars for anyone who could capture the dir the Jersey Devil alive. So adjusted for inflation. ten thousand dollars in nineteen nine. That's around Three hundred fifty thousand, right? Today? That's maybe that's like I will personally wrestle a winged horse monster into a butterfly net kind of money. Right? Sandra, please And as you can imagine, actually that massive bounty brought out every hunter eccentric. Trapper and prankster in the tri-state area. Okay, so the hoaxes were elite. My absolute favorite part of this whole circus was a showman named Norman Jeffries. He was local to the area and he bought a kangaroo from a traveling circus. He glued a pair of fake green leather leather wings on its back. Painted green stripes across its fur, put it in a dark cage in a dime museum, and he charged people ten cents to see the captured Jersey Devil. poor kangaroo, Sandra. I know, that's awful. Needless to say, the trick didn't last long. The fake creature was exposed when the Jersey Devil refused to shriek. And instead reached out to eat a piece of celery from the handler's hand. Can you imagine being that kangaroo though? Like you're picture it, you're minding your own business in Australia. And then you get shipped to Philadelphia. And then you get glued with fake bat wings. Painted like a lime flavored zebra. and presented as an ancient swamp demon. That that's The sheer disrespect for this beautiful creature. Poor thing. It's awful. I agree. It's awful, Sandra. Well, skeptics and historians have tried for decades to explain away the legend. Some point to Those sandhill cranes, Sandra, those are those large birds, you know, with the red eye patches. Yeah, I think we brought them up during the Mothman episode. Very funny, they keep coming up with cryptos. Yes, yes. while others point to the historical political feud between Benjamin Franklin and the rival Leeds family, printing press, in the seventeen hundreds, suggesting the devil was a political slur aimed at Titan Leeds. So if you don't Know both Ben Franklin and Titan Leeds were writing I guess you could say rival almanacs at the time. Yes. Which we can get into that another time, but the thing you have to understand it's very funny. but the thing is sandhill cranes I they don't chase trolley cars and political rivalries don't leave cloven hoof marks on snow covered roofs. So theoretically, whether it's a physical biological anomaly. A localized elemental spirit or a mass thought form created by centuries of fear. Something very real resides in those pines. Yes. To this day, truckers driving down the Atlantic City Expressway late at night swear They hear that unearthly piercing scream just echoing over the trees. Sandra, you know what this reminds me of? What? Do you remember that movie Jeepers Creepers? Yes. That's with Justin Long, yes. Yes. It reminds me of I wonder if they based that movie off of the Jersey Duck. Well the Jeepers Creepers movie is actually based on a real world trime true crime case. Did you know that? No, I didn't. We'll have to look into that. I'll tell you all about it once we turn the camera the microphone off. Well, speaking of shifting atmospheres, chaotic energy and mysterious movements in the dark. Okay. Smoother than last week. Yeah, let's lift our gaze from the pine barrens up to the stars. So welcome everyone to our segment of Cosmic Percurrents, our weekly astrological breakdown of planetary alignment. All right, let's just pretend we're weather women now. We are looking at the week of Monday, September twenty-first through Sunday, September twenty-seventh, twenty twenty-six. And mom, this is a massive threshold week. We're sitting right on the edge of the autumnal equinox. It really is a powerful astrological pivot, Sandra. The headline event for this week occurs on Tuesday, september twenty second when the sun officially transits into Libra. This marks the fall equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and A moment where day and night are in exact physical balance. Which means the light and dark are equal for about five minutes before the universe decides to plunge us into full-blown existential autumn darkness. My favorite time of year. It's just beautiful. But seriously, Libra energy is ruled by Venus. It's asking us to evaluate balance. Seek harmony in our closest relationships and take an honest look at where we might be giving too much of our personal energy. Exactly. Equinoxes are natural portals for recalibration. But as we move through early week, specifically Monday the 21st into Tuesday the 22nd, we have a very potent alignment. Mercury, in analytical Virgo, forms a sharp supportive trine to Pluto in transformative Aquarius. What does that mean in plain English? It means your brain is operating with a magnifying glass and a heavy-duty shovel. Mercury rules the mind and communication. Pluto rules deep secrets, the shadow self, and underlying truths. If someone has been hiding something from you, or you've been lying to yourself about a Job or a relationship or a bad habit. This aspect is coming in like a private investigator who hasn't had his morning coffee. Truths will come to light this week. It is a brilliant aspect for intuitive research, psychological breakthroughs, tarot readings, and honest heart-to-heart conversations. But just remember, Pluto energy can feel intense and confrontational. Don't use the truth as a weapon to tear others down. Use it as a scalpel to remove what is toxic in your life. Then by Friday, September 25th, the moon transits into fiery Aries and forms a direct opposition to Venus and Libra. This is classic I want deep energy a deep connection, but I also want you to step out of my personal space kind of energy. I relate. I it can definitely spark minor friction between your desire for independence and your commitment to your partners or friends. Don't pick unnecessary arguments just to release pent-up steam. So the takeaway from the stars this week is simple: embrace the balance of the equinox on Tuesday. Use midweek to get completely honest with yourself. And give people extra breathing room over the weekend when that Aries moon stirs up the drama. And now it's time to settle into tea and tarot. Straight to the point, I like it. So I have poured us a fresh pot. And what blend did you whip up for us tonight, Ma? Well, tonight we are sipping on a special herbal blend of mugwort. There you go. Blackberry leaf. And hibiscus. Mugwort Is an ancient herb sacred to the goddess Artemis, Sandra. Mm-hmm. It is. It's renowned in herbal folklore for enhancing intuition, opening the third eye, and encouraging vivid dream recall. It's perfect for the equinox energy and cryptid discussions. It is. It's weirdly good. it tastes like wild blackberries and it has it's a little earthy. Hmm. Well, okay. I actually like this. It is incredible. Right? I told you. It seems like it would really go with a good scary story full of some existential dread. It's got that flavor. existential dread. That's what we're calling it now. Hey, I like it. It keeps you guessing. Well, fair enough. Speaking of unexplainable things, let's talk. Jersey Devil before we pull today's card. From a spiritualist stand standpoint, Sandra, what is your actual take on cryptids? honestly, I think cryptids hit different. So spirits and energy work are common in our family, right? But cryptids, they sit in this weird uncanny valley between actual biology and total myth. So why do you think people are so obsessed with them? Well, because deep down we hate the fact we've mapped out the entire planet. We built concrete, strip malls, and GPS over every inch of dirt. The idea that there's a million acres of dense pine trees in New Jersey where some ancient winged monster is just hanging out where it has that room and it's undocumented. It's it's oddly comforting. It means the world still has secrets that we just we can't Google. I love that perspective. Hmm. It's like a giant cosmic reminder that Human knowledge has limits, you know? Yeah. We can't know everything in nature. That's the natural order of things. We kind of need that mystery to stay sane. Exactly. And we do, we all need a little chaos in the woods, in my opinion. It meant to that. Now let's consult. The tarot deck and see what kind of chaos or clarity the cards have for everyone listening this week. So as I'm shuffling our deck, I'm focusing on the energy for everyone tuning in for the week of September 21st through September 27th. Xandra, whenever your intuition speaks, tell me when to stop. Stop right there. Okay. Look at that. We have pulled the moon. come on. How funny is that? We spend an hour talking about swamp monsters working in the dark and we draw the moon card. The universal always has impeccable timings, Andra. The moon is the card of illusion. Intuition and the subconscious mind. So when the moon appears in a spread, it indicates that things are not entirely as they seem on the surface. Shadows can stretch and look like terrifying monsters. But those same shadows can also hide profound intuitive wisdom and hidden strength. That makes me think of that Mercury Pluto Trine we were just talking about. The Moon is warning us not to trust immediate, fear-based first impressions this week. If you hear a strange noise in the dark or feel a wave of anxiety, just don't s immediately assume the worst case scenario. Don't let your mind build a horse-headed demon out of a simple shadow. Take a breath, step back, trust your gut, but verify the facts before you react. Absolutely. Embrace the mystery of the season, but do not let unexamined fear distort your perspective. Now we are thrilled to officially launch a new and recurring segment on Beyond the Spiritual Nexus. And we are calling this segment Guess What Happened to Me. Or you can connect with us on social media channels. But now to kick off this segment. Xandra is going to share a story that actually took place right in my childhood home. The house her grandparents owned down in Texas. Okay, yeah. so growing up in our family, you know, people assume I'm immune to getting scared by the paranormal or Just weird happenings. And we've we've both seen our fair share of residual hauntings. Yes, we have. Family spirits passing through. But this this was different. This must have been you you haven't told me about this one before. So let's start by setting the scene for everybody. What was The setup that night, Sandra? Well, this was this was back when we lived deeper in Texas, going towards the Louisiana border. All of us cousins were having a sleepover in the living room spread out across sleeping bags and couches and air mattresses and we were a big brood, so there must have been about twelve grandkids all piled in there. So the living room had this big picture window along the the right side of the wall. if you remember the living room it had the T V and the two walls on the side. Yes. And I was asleep on that chair right there. And then there was the big picture window. And On that right side wall, going past it, that wall looked directly out towards this overgrown path that led to the lake behind the house. I remember that path and that lake. I have caught many fish in that lake. Really? And you know, at night with no city lights out there, it was completely pitch dark. Exactly it was. So it was in the middle of the night and I woke up, but the first thing that caught me off guard wasn't a sound. It was the light. The sky outside the window didn't didn't look like that. It didn't look pitch black. It was this deep aqua blue color. almost like looking up from the bottom of a pool, like like chlorine blue. It made everything outside look like you were staring into a pool. Wow. And then what did you see, Sandra? I looked over at the big window. It was it was right there above me, and standing right outside on the edge of the lake path was a woman. She had long blonde hair and she was wearing a white dress. She was just standing there, completely still. She was watching all of us sleep. Did she feel like Did it feel like an aggressive spirit or was it just watching? Mm, just watching. It wasn't menacing. But it it was really unsettling. I was so groggy that my brain kind of short circuited, I guess. I didn't really process what I was seeing beyond the visual. I just pulled up my blanket and closed my eyes and somehow I managed to drift back to sleep. Did you tell anyone about it the next morning? As soon as I woke up, you know, I I pulled one of my older cousins aside in the kitchen and whispered everything I'd seen. And she listened, and then she got really quiet. And she was very strict with me. She gave me some very strict instructions and she told me don't mention a single word of this to grandma or grandpa. You know grandpa gets scared easily by this stuff, so just keep it to yourself. So I I did. I kept my mouth shut for years. Okay, wait a minute. So when did it come back up? A few years ago. We were all hanging out and the house came up. You know, the property has all kinds of stories about it. That's the house your brother was chased by that flying shadow creep figure going towards. but anyway, I finally mentioned the blonde woman in the window. The moment I said it, all all of my cousins froze. And it turns out every single one of them had seen her too. At different times, over different summers, watching them through various windows around the house. Well Dandra, hold on a second. What? Why do you look like you just saw a ghost? Well, I know who that is. I'm sitting here listening to you and the second you said blonde hair, white dress by the window you know, I kinda my stomach dropped. I saw her when I was a teenager. Wait. Seriously? You never told me. Well, I forgot all about it or maybe I just blocked it out because I was you know, I was a teenager and and I was freaked out at the time. I woke up one night in in the back bedroom and she was standing right s right outside the window. Just staring in at me. The next morning I was so like, you know, unnerved by it that I went straight to your grandma and asked her who on earth was walking around our property in the middle of the night? And what did grandma say? She told me not to worry, that she wasn't a stranger or anything negative. She said that's actually a distant relative of ours. A great aunt. Who passed away really young, like decades ago. Right around the time the family first got that house and the land around the lake. A great aunt. So she wasn't creeping on us. No she was she was just literally watching over the grandkids. Yep, exactly. So, you know, your grandma said she always kept watch over the house, especially when the family was all gathered together under one roof. So she was just keeping an eye on you all while you slept. That actually changes the whole feeling of that memory. I guess it's not much of a scary story anymore, but it it's still spooky, but it's really comforting knowing she was just family. Well, that was a great story to kick things off with. So to everyone listening and If you have a story like Sandra's where something unexplainable happened to you, email us at hello at spiritual nexus podcast.com. My brain has been buzzing with more ideas and cramming them all into eight weeks has been rough. You know what, Sandra, same here. There's so much I want to bring to the podcast, but so little time. We will incorporate many things. I wish we'd had time to cram in mentions of Ben Franklin harassing Titan Leeds. The whole saga is hilarious. Almanac beef has to be the last thing I could have expected while researching the Jersey Devil. The almanac beef sounds like a like a colonial era recipe, Zeb. Anyway.
